Piero della Francesca is one of the most important artists of fifteenth-century Italy. The artwork he produced—frescoes and panels—as well as his exploration of perspective and geometry in painting secures his place as one of the leading figures of the Renaissance.Many of the ideas that recur throughout his work seem to have been inspired by a brief stay in Florence when he was only about.

Madonna and Child Enthroned with Saints and Angels is an altarpiece for the front of a church. Because it has three panels it is called a triptych. An artwork with two panels is called a diptych. The figures in this painting look more like real people than the figures in most medieval paintings. This shows the influence of the Renaissance idea.

It hung in a part of the church reserved for the nuns, who may have insisted on its conservative details, such as the elaborately clothed Christ Child. By contrast, the weighty male saints look to the future—the recent works by Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo that Raphael had just begun to study in Florence.

The work is set in a large niche, depicting a sacred conversation within an established scheme: the Madonna and Child enthroned, a musician angel on a step and four saints placed symmetrically at the sides. They are St. Peter the Apostle, St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Lucy and St. Jerome.
